My bud that I hunt with in Marshall county couldn't get off work today, so I sat this one out. Fine with me, because I am feeling a bit under the weather with allegies AGAIN. Plus, as Featherduster said, it is snowing here in LaPorte county as of a little bit ago so all the better reason to stay in. Have a draw hunt at Kingsbury this weekend so just enough time to rest up. Good luck all.

I am stuck at work. I've been looking out over large flocks of turkeys all day. All have been juveniles (13-14 years of age). Here is a photo of one of the flocks...

You've heard it said that when you feel like getting up to wait at least 20 more minutes. About 8:45 I thought i heard a distant gobble. Listened but heard nothing else. Got my box call out and cranked out some loud helps trying to battle the wind. Waited 10 minutes, nothing. Popped my mouth call back in and did two excited yelp and cluck sequences. Waited 10 minutes and again, nothing. Decided it was time to pack up due to some dark clouds rolling in. (This where I should have waited). I stand to my feet, take one step forward to look North and there he is, staring at me at 150 yards. He turned and burned! He was coming in quietly. He pprobably heard my calls, logged in his built in GPS, and decided not to throw out his voice battling the wind and just came my way. To sum it all up, I BLEW IT! Got to hate a quiet bird! But, he does make things more interesting.

No bird for Jon Snow. I didn't get there soon enough to get the spot where I saw one cross yesterday. Just as I was driving up to it, 4 guys got out of a truck. Seemed like a lot of guys for a handicap zone, but what is it to me? I found another spot where a horse trail intercepts a small clear; it was a nice spot and probably better for deer season. Didn't hear any gobbling today either except from myself. Does this cold weather quiet them down or is it just late? Two shots went off in the direction of the 4 guys, and 4 shots in the other direction. Didn't hear anything after 9:30. I'm thinking one will be waiting for me next week. I must say, it was nice lounging in my Tahoe; I almost fell asleep once. I am absolutely exhausted and all I did was drive 2 hours and sat. I'm a mess. Hey, good thing I didn't look in the mirror this morning, because I was determined to shoot the first beard that I saw. I must have put on too much testosterone gel last night.

As far as gobbling goes, Jon...
Gobbling is completely unpredictable. One morning, every tom and Jake in a 5 mile radius might gobble nearly non-stop for hours. The next morning the same birds might go nearly silent, it can be very frustrating.

I feel like the cold weather has a play in it, on a nice warm day I feel I hear more gobbles than on a cold day.

Got out a 6:30 AM with my son in law. Parked on some private land owned by a friend that backs up to Hoosier National in Clark County. Got out of the truck and it bust loose raining. Got back in to wait it out. Rain stopped in 5 minutes. Back out of the truck to load our guns and heard gobbling immediately. Headed toward the gobbles. Got close enough and set up our decoys and were about to start calling. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. Last noise we heard today. Hunted until close to noon. Had one real nice set up that we worked for 2+ hours. Nothing. On the way to this spot we both looked up at some movement in a tree. Sure as heck it was a male turkey about thirty feet up. He looked at these two dummies on the ground and flew off. 8:20 AM high up in a tree?? Drove to some private land. Got up on a ridge and called. Only response were geese and crows. I think they were laughing at us and we deserved it......

Jakes attacking my Avian X Jake decoy.. They stick around about 15 minutes flogging my decoy. I let them hoping it would attract a long beard but after awhile I said that's enough.. I'm having trouble uploading the bigger one.
