You've heard it said that when you feel like getting up to wait at least 20 more minutes. About 8:45 I thought i heard a distant gobble. Listened but heard nothing else. Got my box call out and cranked out some loud helps trying to battle the wind. Waited 10 minutes, nothing. Popped my mouth call back in and did two excited yelp and cluck sequences. Waited 10 minutes and again, nothing. Decided it was time to pack up due to some dark clouds rolling in. (This where I should have waited). I stand to my feet, take one step forward to look North and there he is, staring at me at 150 yards. He turned and burned! He was coming in quietly. He pprobably heard my calls, logged in his built in GPS, and decided not to throw out his voice battling the wind and just came my way. To sum it all up, I BLEW IT! Got to hate a quiet bird! But, he does make things more interesting. Your signature line says it all. Good luck next hunt

Yeah, it was fun. Just wish I had a real camera instead of an iPhone ..
The dominant Jake was doing most of the flogging and every now and then he would smack one of his buddies too..
I had a hard time running them off. Finally when I got out of the blind to reset the Jake decoy they took of running..

I think if It would have happened to me I'd be eating Jake n Noodles with mashed potatoes for supper. I love wild turkey. My favorite wild game.

Hey, that bird that I saw yesterday had at least an 8" beard. Would a jake have a beard this long?

If it was a small bird with an 8-9 inch beard it could have been a bearded hen.

Short recap. Left work an hour early but still breaking day already. Hit a big doe, messed up my truck. Kept going get to my public spot. A truck there already but no sign in his dash showing he was drawn for turkey hunt so I go in. Right away spot a small bird, call and he comes running across the end of the field. No decoy, he hangs up, I miss... Take a breath. Look up and see a fan sticking out of the weeds a few hundred yards up. Put on the sneak, pop up he's 100yds and BOOM BOOM he goes flying. Apparently the other truck is in here and hunting illegally. Great. While sneaking I heard a few gobbles off in the woods where I killed last year. Eased in here, decoy out and just gonna wait it out here for an hour or so and try to make it back home without any more mishaps... The day just kept getting better.. Gave up on that set and decided to cut through the woods to a small field at the end of the big one I started on. Sure enough, BIG long beard feeding by himself. He's about 50yds off the edge and walking up the edge. Do my best to catch up and get to the edge for a shot..he sees me, I take a moving shot and miss number 2 for the day. Figured I'd had enough and head back, round the corner into the big field and what do ya know? There goes another long beard running into the woods at about 60yds.. Oh well keep going towards the truck. Look up and see a bird towards the end of the field, drop in the woods and ease that way. Pop up and guess what, 3 stutters but by this time I'm wore out and not moving very stealthy, a hen pops up between me and them and the games over. Best and worst opening day ever..lol. I'd say on a normal day I'd be done but after being up about 30 hrs and working all night I definitely wasn't on my A game.. Try again in the morning.

Working until 3am so no morning hunt for me tomorrow. The wife and I will probably hit the woods around 3:30 tomorrow and sit until they go roost.

This will be her first time out! Bought her clothes two seasons ago but she refuses to go in the early morning hours. I was bummed I screwed up on the bird this morning, more so because I know I'm a better hunter than that, but at the same time I was ok with it knowing that she will get to be with me tomorrow. Really looking forward to it!

I'm sure some of your alarms are about to go off beckoning you to the turkey woods. Be safe, good luck and happy hunting! I'll join you all later this afternoon after I get a little shut eye

Alarms. Heck my alarm for me to get my kids up for school went off yesterday at 6:45, just as I was starting to get one to answer my calling off the roost. You know, there is nothing louder than an alarm going off in the quiet woods in the am. To add to that do you have any clue how long it takes to get your cell phone out of your pocket to turn said alarm off? Three hours and 12 minutes...seemed liked it at least. Good luck fellas. Yes woody, I'm being a wuss again. Said it yesterday and again today, way to early.

2015 Indiana turkey season Day #2....
I'm set up in the corner of a field close to where Woodmaster heard a ton of gobbling yesterday. He had three gobblers come into his food plot blind yesterday and one rode home with him... They never gobbled at all, just came in silent mouthed... I'm saving that for Saturday.. Hopefully the one he heard here is in his strut zone.
Nice COOL morning..
Good luck, have fun and be safe...

It's a trumpeter blowing.....that will wake up gobblers for sure...
