Hope the buck that just went by at 20 yds is around this fall. He might be a shooter if not for me than my nephew. His antlers were growing to my suprise.

The details...
Yesterday Woodmaster was hunting our little food plot and ended up killing a nice bird about 11:30. He had heard a couple birds that morning and one gobbled his fool head off. He was up on a hill east of our food plot and Woodmaster could hear him gobbling back and forth in his strut zone. It sounds like the north end of his strut zones was in close proximately of a pop up blind we had on the corner of our property overlooking a farm field south of us. I've got permission from the non-resident owners to turkey hunt that property. I have access through a locked gate and can park at their old barn. A 1/4 mile walk puts me in that blind.
That is where I decided to hunt this morning and try and catch that vocal gobbler in his strut zone. After staking out my Avian X Jake and feeding hen decoys at 30 yards I got in my blind at 5:00 CST.. About 5:30 I heard a gobbler answer a crow, but it sounded like a pretty good distance away on property that we can't hunt. I did a series of yelps and no answer. I considered he was probably too far away to hear it. About 5 minutes later I had one gobble right straight behind me on our property and much closer. Yesterday's vocal bird? I did a yelp and got an answer.. No more calling.
5 minutes later another gobble .. much closer.. No more calling. I then heard footsteps behind me . I had already picked up Old Betsy and was waiting. The gobbler in full strut walked out of the woods right by the blind and started heading for my Jake decoy. If that window did not have a screen in it I could have reached out and grabbed his neck. He was all fanned out so I got the gun up and said to myself, "Please break strut". When he got to the decoy he turned a little sideways and went to half strut and appeared ready to peck the decoy. I put the Simmons Pro-Diamond scope on him and dropped him. It appears he is a two year old. Spurs are right at 3/4 inch but are pretty pointed for a two year old. 9 3/4" beard.
I've got one more KY tag but that will have to wait until next week when Woodmaster is off work again.
Good year!
.

That story officially has me fired up! Unfortunately, I'm still stuck here watching the same turkeys I see every day.

Got in from work around 3:30 this mmorning and got about 4.5-5 hours sleep. It was hard dozing off knowing that the turkeys would be doing their morning roll call and attendance check about an hour after I laid down. Didn't want to sleep too long either and get into that bad habit. Looking forward to this afternoons hunt with my wife!

Woody, you tried or have you ordered any Nitro's lately. I needed some this year Sandy said they have been waiting for 2 years for some powder.

Woody, you tried or have you ordered any Nitro's lately. I needed some this year Sandy said they have been waiting for 2 years for some powder. I've been rationing the Nitros.. I load up a Magnum Blend as shell number one. I have a Nitro in my jacket pocket . My thinking is if a bird hangs up out there at 50+ yards I would quietly slip the Magnim Blend out and slip in the Nitro.. I'm not saying the Magnum Blend is not a 50 yard shell though. I've got two left of the Nitros.... I gave one to Woodmaster for his KY bird since we were hunting a big field... Some folks seem to be liking the Winchester XRs ...

I have two boxes and can spare some. I'm thinking I'll shoot a bird, but not planning to miss 19 times ...maybe 15 or 16.

Got my first turkey at 7:35 this morning...been hunting them for the past 4 years...in that 4 years i have been chasing the same particular bird...Gold Bird is what we dubbed him...never could get him close enough until this morning...finally i got him and he was my first turkey ever...i was set up in a cut corn field looking east to a wood line and corner...at 6:18 i heard gobbles that confirmed the birds were roosted right on the edge of the field...i had a hen and jake decoy set up 15 yards in front of me...i let out a couple yelps from my slate call just to let them know i was there...at 7:25 they finally flew down right into the field 50 yards to my right...they made their way south and then cut right towards me...coming into my right side from behind me i thought i was gonna have to shoot so i turned around...they were coming right to my decoys so i sat back into the first position...they were two long beards and the one was gobbling his head off and strutting ...the other was silent as a mouse and just followed...Gold Bird came up to my jake decoy and grabbed it by its neck and started jerking it around ...then he jumped up and stomped it and broke the stake that holds it up...thats when i squeezed off and down he went...the other tom ran a circle and came back and stomped him...i had to actually run him off...i just bought a new Benelli Nova pump and i broke it in this morning...i couldnt be happier...im glad the wind blew my blind off of me yesterday ...otherwise i would have shot that jake...i cant believe i finally bagged a bird but the special part is id been chasing this bird for 4 years...left spur 29mm...right spur 30mm....beard 11 inches...28 lbs ...happy hunting everyone ...be safe and good luck!
